London four-piece Velvetine took to the stage at the 100 Club on Tuesday night for a headline show to celebrate the launch of their latest single ‘Traces’, a sonic maelstrom exploring themes of emotional denial and self-awareness.
The stellar performance, elevated by support from the sensational Sulk and the hypnotic Slow Cooked, gave further credence to the young band’s burgeoning reputation as a dark and immersive act who’s shimmering, gothic, post-punk sound has continued to garner attention since the launch of their debut single ‘Curtainsong’ back in February 2023.
From the outset, the track immerses listeners in an intense, brooding atmosphere with a sudden, forceful barrage of staccato bass and drums. The arpeggiated guitar, reminiscent of a Goth-inspired Cocteau Twins, adds a chilling layer of texture. Joining, lead singer Mia Scarlet grapples with the complexities of the ego and its tendency to deny our faults, hindering self-improvement. The lyrics, delivered with an unwavering confidence, invite listeners to acknowledge (and perhaps to a greater extent, address) their own inner demons.
Velvetine's ability to create a haunting and atmospheric soundscape, combined with their introspective lyrics, makes this track a standout release.
