London based folk singer-songwriter Sonny Syd adds to his string of single releases so far with his latest number entitled ‘Start Anew’. Laid down at Moss Recording Studio in Hackney in January of 2024, just over a year later ‘Start Anew’ finally gets to bask in the light of day, ahead of its release Syd explained: “The lyrics and feel of the song aim to describe and give form to the feeling of 'butterflies' or a nervousness when confronted with change or something new.”

‘Start Anew’ is a soft-hearted and poignant piece of work, evoking memories of past mistakes which have possibly transformed into current regrets, however still allowing a small corner of the room to be occupied by hope brewing in the form of change and progress. With its tenderly finger-picked guitar meandering its way up and down the fretboard joined by minimalistic strings and Syd’s vocals which take on a soulful quality as they build, ‘Start Anew’ feels like a nod towards a period of one's life that is no more and a step in the other direction towards a better place.
Experimenting with vocals, the latest release from Syd builds up in intensity with the question ‘What to do?’ double-tracked towards the end, creating chaotic layers which shoot out amongst a flurry of sound (including an acoustic guitar being played with a bow) to intentionally swamp the listener and create an overwhelming sensation, directly reflecting the song's main theme of anxiety when confronted with change.
